XAT Exam Pattern 2018 – Every year, Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is conducted by XLRI for admissions in MBA programmes offered by XLRI and other management institutes. XAT 2018 is counted among the most difficult management entrance exams in India. XAT exam is divided into 2 parts – Paper 1 and Paper 2. The Paper 1 comprises of 3 sections – Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. XAT Exam Pattern 2018
As mentioned above, XAT exam is divided into 2 parts – Paper 1 and Paper 2. It is mandatory for the candidates to attempt both the papers. Given below is an overview of both the sections –
XAT Paper 1
It comprises of three sections –
- Verbal & Logical Ability
- Decision Making
- Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
The total number of questions asked in this section is 72. Each question carries 1 mark. All the questions in Paper 1 are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The table given below gives a section-wise break-up of the questions asked in the exam –

In the Verbal Section, the questions are mainly asked from the topics like sentence correction, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, critcal reasoning, and reading comprehension. In Quantitative Ability Section, the topics from which the questions are asked include percentages, time & distance, polynomials, progressions, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, venn diagram, probability, data sufficiency, permutations & combinations etc. The questions in the Decision Making Section test the candidates’ ability to process the information available and take productive decisions. In some of the questions, certain data is provided and the candidates are required to analyse the same. This is one of the most challenging sections in the exam.
XAT Paper 2
It comprises of two sections –
- General Knowledge
General Knowledge section comprises of 25 questions of 1 mark each. In essay writing, the students are required to write an essay on a topic given in the question paper.

XAT Exam Pattern 2018 – Marking Scheme
The candidates must have a clear understanding of the marking scheme followed by XLRI for the evaluation of XAT 2018 papers. In XAT exam, each question carries one mark. In Paper 1, the total number of questions as well as the total marks is 72.
The students must keep in mind that there is negative marking in XAT exam. The following points give information on XAT negative marking –
- For every wrong answer, 0.25 mark will be deducted.
- The candidates can not leave more than 12 questions unattempted. If they do, 0.5 mark will be deducted for each unattempted question. For leaving up to 12 questions unattempted, no marks will be deducted.
- The negative marks for unattempted questions will be deducted proportionately across the 3 sections.
XAT Exam Pattern 2018 – Duration
The total duration of the XAT exam is 210 minutes (3.5 hours). While the Paper 1 is of 170 minutes, the Paper 2 is of 35 minutes. The duration of the exam is likely to remain the same this year. However, the possibility of a change in the total duration or sectional duration cannot be ruled out.

It can be seen in the above table, that the number of questions has decreased over the years. From 104 in the year 2009, the number has came down to 72 in 2017. The marking scheme has also changed over the years. In XAT 2018 too, the number of questions may vary.
XAT 2018 Exam Pattern – Things to Know
- XAT is an offline exam and the students need to mark their answers on the OMR sheets.
- XLRI will not consider the score of XAT Paper 2 for shortlisting the candidates for GD/ PI. However, Paper 2 score will be taken into consideration for shortlisting the candidates final admissions.
- There are slight variations in the exam pattern of XAT every year.
- In paper 1, the questions asked are objective, multiple choice type. In paper 2, there is a mix of objective and subjective questions.
