CAT 2016 Topper – Akshay Mehndiratta’s Success story, a 100 percentiler


The result of the CAT 2016 have been declared and the toppers list of the India’s most reputed management entrance exam is longer then expected. One of the shining names from this list is Akshay Mehndiratta, the former IIT, Delhi alumni has secured a perfect 100 percentile and aims to join IIM, Ahmedabad. Currently, he is preparing for Personal Interview and Written ability Test round from Career Launcher, Educate. In a small conversation with the young aspirant, entrance corner summed up his preparation and time management strategy for CAT 2016.



Entrance Corner – Congratulation on being one of the CAT 2016 Toppers, how are you feeling?

Akshay Mehndiratta – Great, it feels good for now but I have friends who scored 99+ but could not make it to IIM Ahmedabad, so I guess there is still long journey, I have to prepare for PI and Written Ability Test.

Entrance Corner – What score/percentile have you scored?

Akshay Mehndiratta – 100%

Entrance Corner – Were you expecting this percentile?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I was expecting above 99%. In my coaching institutes, they said I could be among the 99+ percentilers of the country but I did not expect a perfect 100.

Entrance Corner – How did you prepare for the exam?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I used to prepare on weekends, i.e on Saturday and take Test Series on Sunday.

Entrance Corner – Were these Test Series helpful?

Akshay Mehndiratta – Yes, they were very helpful, after giving these mock test I used to analyse my performance every week and based on it prepared for the exam.

Entrance Corner – What were the number of hours you devoted to your studies

Akshay Mehndiratta – Since, I am working, I did not have a lot of time for preparations. I studied on Saturday for about 6 hours and took Test series of 3 hours on Sunday. That was my schedule from last 4 months.

Entrance Corner – Tell us about your Preparation strategy

Akshay Mehndiratta – It is more about practice and less about preparation. Since its an aptitude Test so it is important to keep calm and your attitude right. Working on basic skills is important as it will be more helpful in order to crack the paper.

Entrance Corner – Did you took coaching classes?

Akshay Mehndiratta – No, I did not join full-time coaching classes but for my Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) round I have joined weekend programme of Career Launcher.

Entrance Corner – What will be your next step?

Akshay Mehndiratta – Currently I am preparing for Personal Interview and Written Ability, started working on it last week. I don’t have any long-term plan for now, just looking forward to everything wherever it takes me.

Entrance Corner – Any plans regarding Career?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I am looking forward to work in the domain of Finance.

Entrance Corner – Which IIMS do you prefer to join and

Akshay Mehndiratta – My first preferences will be IIM, Ahmadabad after that Bangalore or Kolkatta.

Entrance Corner – If not IIMS then what are the other B-schools you are planning to apply for?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I am targeting only IIMS.

Entrance Corner – How will you be preparing for PI/Written Ability Test?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I have joined weekly programme of Career Laucher to improve communication skills and writting ability, I dont devote time in weekdays, its mainly on weekends.

Entrance Corner – Tell us something about your family?

Akshay Mehndiratta
– My parents are working in ONGC, Delhi. I have one sibling, she is working in USA.

Entrance Corner – Was it your first attempt?

Akshay Mehndiratta – No, it was my second attempt.

Entrance Corner – Did you joined coaching classes before this?

Akshay Mehndiratta – No, I never joined coaching classes, I had the preparation material of TIMES which I used to practice at home. I never took regular classes.

Entrance Corner – Tell us something about your academic profile

Akshay Mehndiratta – I did my graduation from IIT, Delhi in year 2016. I did my schooling from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan Baroda, I scored 90+ in 10th and 12th.

Entrance Corner – Are you a fresher or working somewhere?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I am currently working in EXL, an analytics company.

Entrance Corner – What are your hobbies?

Akshay Mehndiratta – I like to travel, Drive, also like to play guitar, dance.
