CAT Reservation of Seats 2017 – Seats Reserved for Different Categories

As mentioned above, a certain percentage of seats in IIMs are reserved for SC, ST, OBC and PWD candidates. The table given below provides an overview of the seats reserved for different categories –

CAT Reservation of Seats 2017 – Things to Remember

The candidates who wish to apply for CAT exam under any of the reserved category, must read all the instructions carefully. Once the registration process closes, any request to change the category will not be entertained. Here are some of the important things every CAT 2017 exam applicant needs to know –

      • The candidates with the following disabilities can apply under PWD category –
        • Low vision blindness
        • Hearing impairment
        • Locomotor disabilities (more than 40%)
      • The candidates need to upload the SC/ST certificate, NC-OBC certificate or PWD certificate (as applicable) at the time of registration.
      • The candidates need to show the original certificate at the time of admission. Also, they will have to submit a photocopy of the certificate. If a candidate fails to do so, he/she will be disqualified from the admission process.

CAT Reservation of Seats 2017 – What is Non-Creamy Layer in OBC?

Non-creamy layer refers to the comparatively poorer and less educated members of Other Backwards Classes (OBC). People belonging to non-creamy layer are eligible for quotas in various institutions as per the rules specified by the government.

As per the definition, the creamy layer is –

      • An annual income of more than 6 lacs – Applies for professionals, agriculturists, landowners etc.
      • High posts in the government – Group A/B employees (there are a few exceptions).
      • Governor, Supreme court judges and other constitutional posts.

The concept of creamy and non-creamy layers in OBC was established to differentiate between people belonging to economically weaker and economically powerful sections of the society. As per the reservation of seats in CAT 2017, 27% of the seats are reserved for people belonging to non-creamy layer in OBC.

CAT Seat Reservation 2017 – Details to be filled

In the caste certificate, the candidates belonging to SC/ST category need to fill all the detailed correctly. Name of the candidate, village/ town, district/division and state/ union territory along with the caste/ tribe the candidate belongs to must be clearly mentioned on the certificate. Most importantly, it must be signed by the competent authorities. PWD certificate must be signed by the doctor. The type of disability and the degree of disability (in percentage) should be clearly mentioned on the certificate. A small description of the disability must also be given on the certificate.
