The MAT entrance test will have 200 multiple choice questions (MCQs) and these MCQs will be distributed into 5 sections. The total time duration of the entrance test is 150 minutes i.e. 2 hours 30 minutes and there are no sectional time limits. MAT Exam Pattern 2017 Sections in the Question Paper

1. Reading Comprehension

The first section in the MAT question paper September 2017 is Reading Comprehension. This section will contain 40 questions. Each question carries 1 mark. In this section, the candidates will be tested mainly for their comprehensive and reading skills, and that will include reading a given passage and answer question related to that passage. Similarly, candidates will be asked to choose a word or phrase amongst the given options nearly similar in meaning to a given word. For good score in this part, it is very important for the candidates to know their grammar and also the ability to comprehend what is given to read. The time suggested to be taken to solve this part is 30 minutes.

2. Mathematical Skills /  Quantitative Aptitude

The second section as the name suggests will contain questions to test the mathematical skills of the candidates. There will be 40 questions each carrying 1 mark.

This section of the MAT 2017 paper will comprise of the questions that will require good Mathematical Skills and the ability to do quick-oral calculations. Questions in this section will be based on direct applications of concepts and formulae and will have questions from Business Mathematics, Arithmetic, and Geometry. Candidates must practice basic formulae and concepts of Mathematics and also the Sample and Previous year question paper. The time suggested to be taken to solve this part is 40 minutes.

3. Data Analysis & Sufficiency/ Data Interpretation

This section contains 40 questions of 1 mark each. This section targets to test the data interpretation skills of the candidates in regards to diagrams, reports and other such factual data. Hence, the questions will be asked on the basis of Pie chart, Tables, Data Sufficiency & Bar / Line graphs. The knowledge of multiplication tables, ability to quickly convert fractions to percentage, knowledge of square and cube roots and other calculation short-cuts and approximation techniques will be of immense help to the students in solving the questions  quickly and correctly. The questions here would again be calculation intensive. The time suggested to be taken to complete this section is 35 minutes.

4. Logical/Intelligence & Critical Reasoning

As suggestive from the name, this section will consist of 40 questions of 1 mark each, and will test the logical and critical reasoning of all the candidates. It is considered that solving questions in this section is comparatively easier as compared to the others. The questions here are asked from the topics like Data Arrangement, Blood Relations, Series and Sequences and Critical Reasoning,  Direction Sense, Input/Output analysis, Coding and Decoding. These topics require rigorous practice and the key to getting through this section is to have a basic knowledge of logical reasoning. Apart from that, this section forces the candidate to exert their mental capabilities to the maximum and that is the challenging part. The time suggested to be taken to complete this section is 30 minute.

5. Indian & Global Environment/ General Awareness

The questions in this section will basically focus upon the current affairs of India and the world. The questions can vary from the topics of politics to economy, from scientific developments to questions on environment. The most effective way to get through this section is to be aware of the happenings of India and the World. Apart from Current affairs, this section will also contain questions of General Awareness. Business, politics, sports, awards and distinctions, books – anything could be a part of this section. Topics and events of the current and previous year would mostly be expected to be asked. Like the other sections, this section will consist of 40 one marker questions too and the estimated time one should spend in answering this section is 15 minutes.

Note: The MAT score is based on the first four sections only. The Institutes decides if the score in the fifth section, i.e, Indian & Global Environment/ General Awareness shall be considered or not.

The MAT Exam Pattern 2017 is that the question paper will have:

– A total number of 200 questions, divided into 5 sections of 40 questions each.
– Each question will carry 1 mark.
– The scheme of negative marking is not clearly specified but is considered to be somewhere around 1/4th of the marks of the question, i.e. 0.25 , and
– The total time allocated for the examination is 150 minutes.
