XAT Exam Pattern 2018: The exam pattern of XAT has been released by XLRI Jamshedpur. XAT exam pattern gives candidates an idea about the marking scheme, sections, number of questions, total marks and time duration of the exam. XAT 2018 is scheduled to be conducted in online mode. According to XAT exam pattern 2018, the exam will be held for 3 hours and 35 minutes duration. The question paper is divided into two parts. The part 1 comprises three sections - Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. While, the part 2 consists General Knowledge and Essay Writing. Except the mode of examination, the basic format of XAT 2018 such as number of sections and time duration is same as previous year. XAT 2018 is a national level management entrance exam conducted for admission to postgraduate management programmes at more than 150 business schools across India. The exam will be conducted on January 7, 2018 across 47 cities in India and 2 abroad. The test evaluates a candidate’s quantitative, qualitative, verbal, data interpretive and decision-making abilities.Candidates appearing in XAT 2018 can check below the exam pattern to understand the overall structure of the exam.
Mode of exam: XAT 2018 will conducted be online this year. Until last year, the exam was held in pen and paper mode. This is the only major change in XAT 2018 exam pattern.
Number of sections: XAT 2018 comprises two parts– Part 1 and 2. In part 1 there are three sections A ( Verbal and Logical Ability), B (Decision Making) and C (Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation). Part 2 comprises two sections General Knowledge and Essay Writing.
Nature of questions: Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation and General Knowledge carries objective type multiple choice questions. Essay Writing Test will carry subjective type questions.
Number of questions: The numbers of questions vary year to year in XAT. Last year, there were 72 questions in Part 1. The general knowledge and essay section in Part 2 carried 25 and one question respectively.
Language of paper: All the question in XAT 2018 will be in the English language.
Exam duartion: XAT 2018 will be of 3 hours 35-minute duration. Candidates have to answer the first three sections-Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation within 170 minutes. While candidates have to answer general knowledge section within 35 minutes.
Negative marks: All questions in XAT 2018 paper will carry equal marks. One-fourth marks will be deducted for incorrect answer.

XAT exam pattern 2018 as per section is given below in details.
Decision Making: This section will carry 21 questions and maximum mark allotted is 21. Questions in decision making section are asked in the form of caselets. Candidates should prepare topics such as Arithmetic, Analytical Reasoning and Situational.
Verbal and Logical Ability: The verbal and logical ability section will have 24 questions and carries 24 marks. The question in this section is asked from Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Analogy based on vocabulary, Sentence correction, Grammar etc.
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA & DI): This section carries 27 questions from topics such as Arithmetic, Algebra and Data Interpretation. The marks of candidates in this section will be calculated out of 27.
General Knowledge (GK): General Knowledge section comprises of 25 questions from static GK and current affairs.
Essay writing: In essay writing, candidates have to write an essay on a given topic. This test assess the candidates writing ability.
In XAT all the questions carry equal marks. There will be total 72 questions in Paper 1 and each carries 1 mark as per XAT marking scheme. For every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. Besides, candidates cannot leave more than 12 questions non – attempted. If they do, 0.5 marks will be deducted for each non – attempted question. For leaving up to 12 questions non – attempted, no marks will be deducted. The negative marks for non – attempted questions will be deducted proportionately across the 3 sections. XAT percentile and merit list will be calculated on the basis of Part 1 of XAT exam pattern.
Over the past seven years, XAT exam pattern changed several times in terms of the number of questions, marking scheme and time duration. In the table below, it can be seen that the number of questions has decreased over the years. From 104 in the year 2009, the number has come down to 72 in 2017. Therefore, it can be expected that In XAT 2018 too, number of questions may vary.

XAT syllabus outlines the chapters and topics that candidates should prepare for each section. The examination authority has not defined any syllabus for XAT 2018. However, analysing previous years’ question papers experts have suggested topics that candidates can prepare to ace the exam. In the Verbal Section, questions are mainly asked from the topics like sentence correction, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension. In Quantitative Ability Section, topics from which questions are asked are percentages, time & distance, polynomials, progressions, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, venn diagram, probability, data sufficiency, permutations & combinations etc. The questions in the Decision Making Section test the candidates’ ability to process the available information and make productive decisions.
