The proposal to conduct joint counselling for IITs, NITs and various other institutes has been accepted. Through it, the admission will be granted into more than 80 engineering institutes, including 21 IITs, 28 NITs, 10 IIITs. Over 32,000 seats throughout the country will be filled via this common counselling procedure.

In 2012, The Ministry of Human Resources & Development, merged AIEEE and IIT-JEE. Now, it has put in another effort to bridge the gap between technical institutions, in the country. For conducting the counselling procedure, a Joint Seat Allocation Authority, has been set up. It will meet this weekend to finalize the details of the the procedure.

The decision of joint counselling seems promising, as it will provide a common platform, via which candidates will be easily able to apply for numerous institute. Candidates will not have to apply individually for each institute. It is also announced that the entire procedure will be held online by National Informatics Center (NIC), for the convenience of the candidates.

"A joint seat allocation process will save time for students and will ensure there are not many vacancies in premier institutions. Since the process does not allow any student to take more than one seat, there is no fear of students blocking seats," defined an IIT professor.

As beneficial as procedure might seem, some have stated concern regarding the issuance of class XII result, as CBSE uses it to prepare the rank. Regarding this issue, one of the professor said, “All boards will have to announce results on time. Problems may arise if students go in for revaluation and score revision. This process takes time and JEE (Main) ranks will increase or decrease on the basis of this. As we are taking into account multiple rank systems, it may have an impact on the process”.

Earlier, the IITs were reluctant about the joint counselling, as they appealed against it to the Delhi high court. However, now they have given green signal to the notion. Yet, they have also clarified that the IITs will stick to the pre-determined online choice filling schedule, which will begin from 25 June 2015. Also, multiple rank will be considered for the admission and candidates will be allowed to apply in various institutes and courses.

Both the merits and drawback of the common counselling seems justified but only with time we can know whether the counselling will be a success or failure. The schedule, for the counselling will be announced soon, and we will update it here. So keep visiting.
