IITs to offer an executive M.Tech course for working professionalsFor the working professionals, IITs are planning to launch an executive M.Tech course. As per the sources, the idea behind the introduction is to encourage more IIT students to opt for the research work. A committee, consisting of Directors of IIT Bombay, Roorkee, and Hyderabad, will be looking after the project. Once the framework is finished, the final proposal will be sent to IIT Council and MHRD.

It was felt that a number of changes should be made and a new executive programme can be introduced. The executive M.Tech programme can cater to those who are already working, and can be compressed into a one-year programme, and charged as per market rates,” as told by an official source.

It has also been revealed that for the executive M.Tech program, the IITs will be charging the fee as per the market rates. Currently, the M.Tech fee at the IITs is less than the private institutes. For 2 year M.Tech course, the institutes charge, approximately, Rs. 24000 per annum as the fee. Whereas, the M.Tech aspirants are rewarded with the fellowship reward of Rs. 12, 400 per month. Hence, it is expected that introduction of new executive M.Tech course will help in increasing the revenue as well.

The increased revenue can then be used to enhance the already running courses at the IIT, without going into loss. In last few years, IITs have faced trouble in retaining the M.Tech students. After securing a job in Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs), numerous students quit the course in between, explained an official.

At the moment, there are 23 IITs in the country which withhold 72, 000 students in M.Tech. However, the low number of persuaders and students leaving the course in the middle have adversely affected the research work in the nation.

The M Tech programme is an essential step towards good research work. We want more students to complete their Masters. Generally, students get placed after completing their graduation and this progarmme can cater to such students,” told a source

A number if institute, like IIMs, already offer executive programs and IITs aim to follow the similar guidelines. In December 2016, IIT Kanpur hosted the 155th meeting of IIT director. The idea to introduce executive M.Tech program was discussed in it. Along with it, the ideas to encourage sponsored M.Tech by industries were also exchanged.
