Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) is first IIT to join hands with CERN (European Laboratory for Particle Physics) on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiments.

Now, as per the information students pursuing their PhD in Physics can work in the collider whereas undergrads can made their short projects at Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS). Members of some department that are Computer Science, Physics and Electrical engineering can work on the experiments comprising grid computing, data analysis and high-end detector building.

IIT Madras is become the only IIT which is now a part of one of the biggest international collaboration and a full member of the CMS experiment that includes almost 3000 engineers, scientists, and students from around 172 institutes in different 40 countries.

In 2012, Higgs bason was discovered by the CERN. Alongside, he world-wide-web (www) is also included one of the invention of CERN. CERN, an international laboratory known for primal research in experimental high energy physics besides also offers a platform for developing innovative technology through international collaboration. The 02 experiments that contributed to the Higgs boson are CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus).
