Kalpit Veerwal, the boy who topped the JEE Main exam by scoring 360 out of 360, has excelled in JEE Advanced 2017 exam by securing the top rank in the SC category. Kalpit comes from a humble background. His family is based in Udaipur, where his father works as a compounder in a government hospital. Fond of music and cricket, he credits his success to hard work and dedication. Kalpit, who has bagged AIR 109 in JEE Advanced 2017, is also grateful towards his family members and teachers who provided him the guidance and motivation to succeed in the most prestigious exam. According to him, keeping oneself motivated during the preparation phase is the key to crack the JEE Advanced exam. Entrance Corner had a telephonic interview with Kalpit, in which he talked about his performance and preparation strategy for JEE Advanced 2017 exam.

Entrance Corner: Congratulations on your success in JEE Advanced 2017. What was your reaction upon knowing your rank? How did you celebrate?
Kalpit Veerwal: I was happy to know that I got a good rank. I feel satisfied that after all these years, my hard work has paid off and now I’ll finally be able to realize my dream of pursuing engineering from IIT.
I spent time with my family members and went out for a movie with my friends. There were some celebrations at the coaching centre and also at my school.
Entrance Corner: What is your total and section-wise score in JEE Advanced 2017?
Kalpit Veerwal: I have scored 303 out of 366. I scored 82 in Physics, 103 in Chemistry and 118 in Mathematics.
Entrance Corner: Tell us something about your family and school.
Kalpit Veerwal: I did my schooling from MDS Public School in Udaipur. There are four members in my family. My father is a compounder at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital in Udaipur and my mother is a teacher in a government school. My elder brother is pursuing MBBS from AIIMS.
Entrance Corner: Did you take any coaching for JEE Advanced? How did the coaching help you?
Kalpit Veerwal: I took coaching from Resonance Coaching Institute in Udaipur. The coaching classes were quite helpful. The tests really helped me improve my speed and accuracy. The teachers were knowledgeable, helpful and provided me the right guidance.
Entrance Corner: What was your preparation strategy for JEE Advanced?
Kalpit Veerwal: I used to study for around 6 hours a day. I took 2-3 tests in a week. I carefully analyzed my performance in the tests. Also, I revised all the test material once a week.
Entrance Corner: According to you, which section was the easiest and toughest in JEE Advanced 2017?
Kalpit Veerwal: I don’t think any section was easy or difficult. It depends on the aptitude of the student and his preparation level.
Entrance Corner: What is your preferred IIT and engineering branch?
Kalpit Veerwal: I haven’t decided yet. Probably I’ll go for Computer Science. As far as the institute is concerned, I’m most likely to opt for IIT Bombay.
Entrance Corner: What are your hobbies and interests?
Kalpit Veerwal: I like listening to music, playing cricket and watching TV.
Entrance Corner: Who is your biggest role model in life?
Kalpit Veerwal: I don’t have any role model as such. I consider my family members and teachers as my role models.
Entrance Corner: Do you have any message for future IIT aspirants?
Kalpit Veerwal: I would just like to say to the IIT aspirants that they should continue to work hard as I believe that there is no substitute for hard work. Also, it is very important to stay motivated. During the preparation phase, there will always be ups and downs, but the candidates must ensure that they don’t lose focus and keep their motivation level high.
Entrance Corner: What are your future plans? What do you want to do after engineering?
Kalpit Veerwal: I haven’t thought about the future yet. For now, I’m only focusing on engineering. I’ll think about the future while pursuing or after completing my B.Tech.

Kalpit Veerwal: Yes, I have a Facebook page named after me where I give preparation tips and advice to the students preparing for JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
