Putting an end to all the speculation, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially confirmed that JEE Main 2016 will be conducted without any changes as a prerequisite for admissions to the 18 IIITs, 31 NITs and the 18 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). A tender notice reinstating the same has already been issued by the board. The Official Notification regarding the IIT- JEE 2016 is expected to be published after 17 November 2015. The confirmation comes in the wake of speculations that two-tier format of the engineering entrance exam may be done away with and a single entrance test could be conducted from this year.

Under the two-tier format of the Pre-Engineering test, the JEE Main is the first stage and the JEE Advanced is the second stage of the entrance exam. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) had earlier recommended a detailed review of this two-tier pattern of the entrance exam as it is extremely time-consuming and was proving to be quite cumbersome. The existing system extended for over a period of one and a half months. This seemed to be having a cascading effect as the academic session of many of top engineering institutes of the country were being delayed. It was, therefore, felt that a reform in the current system could be of some potential good. The Board was contemplating on introducing a single entrance exam for the NITs and IITs and/or even suggesting that the IITs could go in for a separate exam of its own. However, the recent tender notice that has been published by the CBSE indicates that the format of the entrance test will remain practically unchanged and JEE Main and JEE Advanced will continue to be conducted separately.
