The HRD Ministry of India has decided to merge JEE Main and JEE Advanced from 2015. Admissions into IITs and ISM will now be made via a single entrance examination which will dissolve JEE Main and JEE Advanced altogether. From 2015 onwards, there will be just one single tier examination to admit candidates into IITs, ISM, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs as well as SFTIs. Following the decision of new admission format, all the engineering colleges are required to conduct common counselling for candidates in 2014, as per the government decision.
As of now, JEE Main is used by various SFTIs and CFTIs for admissions into their respective institutions, including IIITs, NITs while JEE Advanced is used to admit candidates into IITs. The top 1.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main are selected for JEE Advanced. In 2012, the government devised a two-tier examination called JEE Main and JEE Advanced to reduce the influence of coaching classes on students.
Ashok Thakur, Secretary, Higher Education quoted that IITs have been informed of the decision and from 2015, they shall follow the new guidelines of single tier entrance examination. “For this year, our agenda is that we want to have common counselling,” Thakur said. “We are very keen on joint counselling. That’s the issue and we want to get after them (IITs). Last year, we tried but IIT Delhi (the coordinating IIT) was very adamant. This (two separate counseling) defeats the purpose of a central exam. What we are asking them is to prepare one merit list,” said Thakur.
While IITs may still be flaring in proud, more states are adopting Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) formerly known as All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). JEE System is being adopted by many states, a trend being observed recently from last year. More states are... Read more
