In a bid to cut out the immense parental and peer pressure that students’ face from comparisons in their pay packages during the placement season, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has decided not to disclose any salary figures from this year. The move came after several students complained of unnecessary pressure to the extent of demotivating them and even forcing them to pick a job with a relatively higher pay over a job that they actually like.
The first phase of placements had kick-started in the IITs on 2 December 2015. The IITs are known to have a good track record of placements and brings its students some very lucrative offers in terms of placements every year. However, the high salaries and lucrative placements come with its own share of problems, primarily because most parents get to hear of only the highest one-crore-plus salaries and sulk that their wards have been offered nothing close to the 7-digit figure. At a recent All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) meeting in Guwahati, therefore, it was decided that the rule of non-disclosure of pay packages will be followed.
Although the IITs have always had this rule of non-disclosure, a conscious decision to implement the same was taken only this year. The confidentiality and non-disclosure clause has also been inserted by a number of participating multinational companies. Earlier the IITs used to reveal some of the highest pay packages while keeping the identity of students a secret. However, the IITs have confirmed that no such discussions relating to the salary figures will be entertained further. The confidentiality clause has also been implemented to protect the privacy of candidates and keep them from any security risks. The IITs have, however, underlined that it cannot do anything about students who disclose their pay packages at their own will.
