On Sunday, in a meeting at IIT-Guwahati, JEE Apex Board (JAB) decided, to allow more entrants to write JEE Advanced. The decision had been proposed to IIT council, which is chaired by HRD minister Smriti Irani. The proposal aims to increase the number of exam takers from 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh.
"Till this year, the top 1.5 lakh students from JEE (main) could sit for IIT-JEE (advanced) and around 10,000 ranks were awarded to fill up seats in the IITs across the country...The number of seats available at the IITs has increased considerably as new IITs have also come into existence. But, over the past three years, only 1.5 lakh students could make it to the IIT-JEE (advanced) examination which is conducted by the IITs. We wanted to ensure that more students could take the competitive examination as seats have remained vacant even this year." - said a member of JAB.
In JEE Advanced 2015, three rounds of counselling were held. Yet, seats were left unfilled in most of the IITs. Individually, in IIT-Kharagpur around 30 seats were vacant and the overall number of unfilled seats in all the IITs was near 200.
"The vacant seats include even those where students had paid the fees and taken admission but did not turn up," - said a senior IIT official
Seeing such situation, the Board aims to ensure that the unfilled seats are occupied by the deserving candidates. Apart from this, the board has also proposed to scrap the currently followed two phase admission procedure for IIT and replace it with a single entrance examination. It plans to merge JEE Main and Advanced paper and let candidate write only one exam for admission into IITs.
"The HRD ministry is keen to hold a single entry admission test for all the engineering colleges. The IITs want their own entrance examination which will be conducted by each IIT in rotation from each of the seven zones. The two-tier admission system may remain in place till 2016. From 2017 onwards a change is likely in the admission process to the country's premier institution. The final call will be taken by the IIT Council subsequently," - as said by a member of JAB
Before 2013, AIEEE and IIT-JEE were two separate papers but the HRD Ministry merged it to bring engineering admission under one roof. Then, the Ministry aimed to conduct a single paper for the admission into IITs and NITs + system. However, IIT-Kanpur defied the notion and declared to conduct its own separate paper for the intake of the candidates. Due to this, the Ministry was forced to formulate a two stage admission procedure, which included JEE Main and JEE Advanced papers.
The proposal of the Board to increase the number of candidates and to conduct a separate paper for IITs admission will be considered in a meeting in October.
