Three new IIITs to become operational next year: MHRD

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has confirmed the news that three new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are being set up in Pune, Ranchi and Nagpur. The MHRD is to collaborate with various private players in setting up the three new IIITs. Vinay Sheel Oberoi, Secretary Department of Higher Education in the HRD Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a number of private companies including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, M /s ADCC Infocad, Nagpur and M /s Hubtown, Mumbai towards this end.

The total number of IIITs on public-private partnership (PPP) mode has gone up to 16 with this. There are four more IIITs in the offing and they are slated to be set up in the month of January 2016. Although the three new IIITs will be operational from the coming academic year, the institutions will initially operate out of temporary campuses.

IIIT-Ranchi, partnered by TCS and Tata Motors will operate from its makeshift campus at the Old Judicial Academy in the Administrative Training Institute at Ranchi. The institute will be mentored by NIT-Jamshedpur.

The industry partners of IIIT-Nagpur are M /s ADCC Infocad and TCS. The institute will have its temporary campus set up at the BMIT Campus. In the meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Government has identified 88 acres of land for the Institute to set up its permanent campus. IIIT-Nagpur will be mentored by BMIT.

IIIT-Pune on the other hand will be partnered by M /s Hubtown Mumbai and M /s Roltas. The temporary campus of the Institute will be set up at the Siddhant Engineering College and the College of Engineering (COE) Pune will act as its mentoring institute. The state government has identified 100 acres of land at Chakan for the institute to set up its permanent campus.

All the three IIITs will admit 120 students each for the upcoming academic year. Admissions will be done through the JEE-2016 examination. By engaging with private players, MHRD hopes to bring out a competitive and well-rounded curriculum that will help build up quality manpower in the IT sector.
