IES Preparation Tips 2018 – Exam Pattern

One of the most important tip for preparation of IES 2018 is to thoroughly know the IES exam pattern. Candidates can check the exam pattern for preliminary and mains exam of IES as given below.

Preliminary Examination

  • The Preliminary examination of IES will consist of two objective type papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • Paper I on General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Test is common for all the candidates while Paper 2 is based on Engineering disciplines chosen by the candidates.
  • The Paper 1 of UPSC IES is of 200 marks while total marks allotted for Paper 2 is 300.
  • Candidates securing minimum qualifying marks in Paper 1 will be shortlisted for Paper 2.
  • The marks obtained by candidates in Paper 1 will be considered for final merit list.
  • There is penalty for wrong answers in prelims exam, 0.33 marks will be deducted for incorrect answers.
  • The Paper 1 will carry total 100 questions while Paper 2 will contain total 150 questions.

Mains Examination

  • The IES mains examination will consist of two conventional type papers. Both papers will be based on Engineering disciplines.
  • The test will be conducted in pen and paper mode and each will be held for three hours.
  • The maximum marks allotted for IES mains exam is 600. There is no negative marks for wrong answers.

General Knowledge Paper

The section on General Knowledge will test the candidate’s current affairs about the country and world. Apart from the current affairs, the paper will also consist of questions from science and technology, general English along with usage of Grammar and Comprehension as well as the comprehension and passage completion.
