Kerala boy, Deric Joseph, has secured 691 marks out of 720 to bag All India Rank (AIR) 6 in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the result of which was announced on June 23, 2017. He has also secured ranks in AIIMS and JIPMER. Deric, a National Level Topper in the Kishore Vaigyan Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), wants to join AIIMS, Delhi. Deric opted for medical profession because he wants to serve humanity. He believes that there is no substitute for hard work. Entrance Corner: Congratulations on your success in NEET 2017. How are you planning to celebrate your success?
Deric Joseph: Thank you. I want to celebrate my success with family. I was expecting to be in top 100 but never thought that I will get AIR 6.
Entrance Corner: What is your NEET 2017 score? What were your ranks in JIPMER MBBS and AIIMS MBBS percentile scores?
Deric Joseph: My NEET 2017 score is 691 out of 720. My AIIMS rank is 16 and JIPMER rank is 17.
Entrance Corner: Tell us something yourself?
Deric Joseph: I hail from Kanuar in Kerala. My father is working as Assistant Registrar in co-operative department and my mother works at co-operative bank. I completed my high school from Densill school and higher secondary from St Anthony’s School.
Entrance Corner: Did you take coaching classes? How did coaching help you in securing AIR 6 in NEET 2017?
Deric Joseph: Yes, I took coaching from Brilliant Study. Coaching helped me to secure AIR 6, the mock tests provided by the institute proved useful for me.
Entrance corner: What was your preparation strategy for NEET 2017 exam? Would you like to share some of the names of books your referred to?
Deric Joseph: In my initial stage of preparation, I used to study 4 hours in a day and in the later part, I dedicated 10 hours for studies. Candidates should focus mainly on NCERT books for biology while for chemistry and physics, they should work for clearing concepts. This will make it easier for them to solve questions. For physics, I referred to Arihant publication book.
Entrance corner: How did you simultaneously prepare for state board and NEET 2017?
Deric Joseph: It is not difficult to prepare for NEET and State Board simultaneously since the syllabus is the same.
Entrance corner: In which college are you planning to take admission?
Deric Joseph: I want to take admission in AIIMS, Delhi rather than going for any medical colleges through NEET.
Entrance corner: How did you keep yourself stress-free during such as hectic schedule? What are your hobbies and interests?
Deric Joseph: I used to play games and read novels to do away with my preparation stress.
Entrance corner: What is your say on the impact of social media on students?
Deric Joseph: I don’t think there is any impact of social media on students. I am active on Facebook and WhatsApp.
Entrance corner: How did you gain interest in medical stream?Which medical specialization would you like to pursue after completing MBBS?
Deric Joseph: I opted for medical profession because I want to serve people. As of now, I haven’t decided the specialization.
Entrance corner: Do you have any message for future NEET aspirants?
Deric Joseph: My advice to future NEET aspirants is work hard and be determined towards your goal. Moreover, its very important to study dedicatedly. Candidates should focus on clearing concepts only then they can solve questions easily.
