The bench of Justices Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar has directed Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the conducting body of NEET to allow medical aspirants of above 25 years to take this entrance test on May 7, 2017.

Advocate C K Singh, who was presenting the case on behalf of CBSE opposed the verdict. He stated that the NEET 2017 application formalities were finalised and redoing the whole exercise will be strenuous. The honourable court set aside this contend and also rejected the aforesaid submissions in this regard.

The Bench directed CBSE to put up a notification on the official website clarifying the age limit and the extension of the NEET 2017 application date. The Joint Secretary of CBSE, Dr. Saiyam Bhardwaj has assured the court regarding reopening of the NEET 2017 registration window by today evening. The candidates above 25 years of age can apply for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2017 (NEET 2017) till April 5, 2017.

This decision has come out as big relief to the students, parents and other activists filing petitions for scrapping of NEET age criteria. Dr Amit Gupta, RTI & Student’s Right Activist, one of the appealent party in this case has tweeted ‘We won, all candidates allowed to submit online application forms by April 5’.

Apart from this, Advocate Vaibhav Srivastava tweeted ‘Congratulations everyone SC directs online portals of CBSE to open for students above 25 years for NEET exam’. Another activist who was supporting the students, Dr Anand Rai, said “A lot of students from rural background will badly suffer if the government doesn’t change its stand. Our nation is already facing shortage of doctors. Fixing such criteria will discourage medical aspirants.”

MCI is yet to release the notice regarding the judgment. However, it has been confirmed from the official twitter accounts of the appealent party that NEET registration will be reopen.

This means that previous eligibility criteria of NEET 2017, according to which the upper age limit to appear for NEET was 25 has been nullified and there will not be any age restriction to appear for the exam this year.

As of now, a total of 11,35,104 candidates have already registered for NEET, which is the highst number of applications received till now. Now, after the reopening of the registration window, this number will be increasing.
