The Supreme Court on Thursday prohibited medical admission in Tamil Nadu until August 22, meaning no MBBS and BDS admission will be held in medical colleges of the state. The court, further, ordered the state government to provide details of students from the state board who have qualified for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in its next hearing on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court asked both TN and Medical Council of India to produce the ratio between the students who passed NEET and those who were unequipped for the test. The bench of justices Dipak Misra, Amitava Roy and AM Khanvilkar heard a batch of petitions filled by several students who have cleared NEET.
‘We do not want a situation where NEET is demolished. Our motto is whatever we do, a student who laboured for common entrance test and got a rank should not suffer at any cost,’ the bench said in the hearing.
Earlier on August 16, 2017, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad cleared an ordinance exempting medical students from Tamil Nadu from appearing for NEET. According to reports, the ordinance will be applicable to government colleges and not private institutes.
